SSG Jeremie S. Border

Staff Sgt. Jeremie S. Border, 28, of Mesquite, Texas, died September 1, 2012, by small arms fire while conducting combat operations in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan.

Border was assigned to Company Alpha, 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Okinawa, Japan and was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom- Afghanistan.

Border graduated from Mesquite High School in 2002 and attended college at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas earning his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Communications in 2006.

He entered the Army in 2006 as an infantryman, where he completed basic training, advanced individual training and basic airborne course at Fort Benning, Ga. In 2006 he was assigned to 1-17th Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

In 2008, Border was selected during the Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course as a SF weapons sergeant, and learned Indonesian at the Special Operations Forces Language Course at the United States Army John F. Kennedy Warfare Center and School.

He was originally assigned to Company Bravo, 1st Bn., 1st SFG (Airborne), Okinawa, Japan in 2009 and was assigned to Company Alpha prior to his deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan.

Border's military education includes the Special Forces Qualification Course, the Warrior Leader's Course, the Advanced Leader's Course, the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) Course and the Basic Airborne Course.

His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terror Service Medal, Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral 2, Army Service Ribbon, Special Forces Tab, Expert Infantry Badge and the Army Parachutist Badge.

He has been posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Afghan Campaign Medal.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Lynne Border, and sister, DeLaynie Kaye Roberts of Mesquite, Texas.

MAJ Wallace Cole Hogan

MAJ Wallace Cole Hogan, Jr. died 11 September 2001 in the terrorist attack against the Pentagon.

He received his commission in 1981 from Officer Candidate School and joined the Georgia Army National Guard as a Rifle and Mortar Platoon Leader. Major Hogan's subsequent assignments provided him a broad base of troop and staff assignments. He attended the Infantry Officer Basic course and served with the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Colorado Army National Guard, as the Detachment Executive Officer and later as the Commander.

Major Hogan attended the Special Forces Officer Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He then served with the 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and Alabama Army National Guard as a Detachment Commander. He attended the Infantry Officer Advanced Course at Fort Benning, Georgia and the Special Forces Thai Language Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He accepted an active duty appointment in the grade of Captain on April 4th, 1993. He served with the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) Fort Lewis, Washington as a Battalion Operations Officer and Detachment Commander; and as the Commander, Special Forces Instructor Detachment, U.S. Army Jungle Operations Training Battalion, Fort Sherman, Panama. He joined the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans.

Awards: Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Scuba Diver Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge and Pathfinder Badge.

Major Hogan was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Medal.

Major Hogan is survived by his wife, P. Pat Phermsangngam (Hogan), Major USAF, Alexandria, Virginia; his parents, Wallace and Jane Hogan of Macon, Georgia; and sisters, Meg Campbell and Kris Leggett.

SFC William M. Bennett

Sgt. 1st Class William M. Bennett was a Special Forces medical sergeant assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Ky. He was killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom on Sept. 12, 2003 near the town of Ar-Ramadi in Iraq.

A native of Tennessee, Bennett was born on March 18, 1968. He entered the Army in December 1986 and completed bridge crewmember training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. His first assignment in the Army was to the 11th Engineer Battalion, Fort Belvoir, Va.

Bennett completed Army diver training in 1989 at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center at Panama City, Fla., and was then assigned to the 7th Engineer Detachment, Fort Kobbe, Panama, where he participated in combat actions during Operation Just Cause.

After deploying to Saudi Arabia in 1991 to participate in Operation Desert Storm, Bennett volunteered for Special Forces training in 1992. In 1994, he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, N.C. He went on to study Arabic at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, N.C.

He was assigned to the 5th SFG in July 1995, where he participated in numerous overseas deployments to include combat operations in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Master Sgt. Kevin N. Morehead was a Special Forces team sergeant assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Ky. SFC Duane A. Thornsbury

Sgt. 1st Class Duane A. Thornsbury died from injuries as a result of a non-hostile vehicle rollover during a combat mission in Baghdad, Iraq, Sept. 12, 2009. He was medically evacuated to the 10th Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad where he was pronounced dead.

Thornsbury, 30, assigned to Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Carson, Colo., was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a member of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Arabian Peninsula.

Thornsbury, a native of Clinton, Md., grew up in Bridgeport, W. Va., enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves April 1996 as a 92Y, Supply Specialist and came onto active duty service September 2002. He later attended the Special Forces Qualification Course, earning his Green Beret in 2006, as a Weapons Sergeant.

Thornsbury's military education includes the Combat Life Savers Course, Warrior Leader Course, Air Assault Course, Basic Airborne Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, & Escape (High Risk), Special Forces Qualification Course, Ranger Course, and Jumpmaster School.

MSG Danial R. Adams

Master Sgt. Danial R. Adams, assigned to 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Stuttgart, Germany, was killed in action in Afghanistan, Sept. 13.

Adams, a native of Oregon, joined the Army in 1995 as an infantryman, where he served with distinction while assigned to 3rd Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga., followed by exemplary service with 1st Bn., 501st Infantry and 1st Bn., 23rd Infantry at Fort Lewis, Wash. After his assignment at Fort Lewis, Adams earned the Green Beret in 2005. His first Special Forces assignment was as a senior medical sergeant with the 3rd SFG (A) at Fort Bragg, N.C. In 2009, he joined 1st Bn., 10th SFG (A), where he served on a Special Forces team. He was killed in action while conducting combat operations with his team in Afghanistan.

Adam's military education includes Airborne School, Jungle Warfare School, Ranger School, Jumpmaster School, Air Assault School, and the Special Forces Qualification Course.

Adam's duty stations include Fort Benning, Fort Lewis, Fort Bragg, and Stuttgart, Germany.

SFC Bradley S. Bohle

Sgt.1st Class Bradley S. Bohle, 29, died on Sept. 16, after his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device, while conducting a mounted patrol in the Afghan city of Ghur Ghuri, in support of combat operations while serving with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in July 2009 as a member of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan. This was his second deployment to Afghanistan in support of the Global War on Terror. He also deployed twice to the Philippines. He was a Special Forces medical sergeant.

Bohle, a native of Baltimore, Md., enlisted into the U.S. Army 1998 as an Information Systems Operator. He was assigned to 2nd Bn., 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized). He later served with 112th Signal Battalion (Airborne) and 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) before deciding to pursue the goal of becoming a Special Forces Soldier in 2006 by attending the Special Forces Selection and Assessment. He completed the Special Forces Qualification Course March 2008 and earned the coveted "Green Beret" as a Special Forces medical sergeant. He was assigned to Co. A, 3rd Bn., 7th SFG (A).

SFC Shawn P. McCloskey

Sgt.1st Class Shawn P. McCloskey, 33, died on Sept. 16, after his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device, while conducting a mounted patrol in the Afghan city of Ghur Ghuri, in support of combat operations while serving with, Company B, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in July 2009 as a member of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan. This was his third deployment to Afghanistan in support of the Global War on Terror. He also served on deployments to Colombia. He was a Special Forces intelligence sergeant.

McCloskey a native of Hudson, N.Y., grew up in Peachtree City, Ga., enlisted into the U.S. Army January 2002 as a Special Forces candidate. He completed the Special Forces Qualification Course May 2004 and earned the coveted "Green Beret" as a Special Forces engineer sergeant. He was assigned to Co. B, 3rd Bn., 7th SFG (A).

Staff Sgt. Joshua M. Mills, 24, died on Sept. 16, after his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device, while conducting a mounted patrol in the Afghan city of Ghur Ghuri, in support of combat operations while serving with, Company A, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom July 15, 2009 as a member of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan. He was a Special Forces communications sergeant with his unit at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Mills, a native of El Paso, Texas, enlisted into the Army in 2005 as a Special Forces candidate. He attended the Special Forces Qualification Course in March of 2005 and earned the coveted "Green Beret." He was then assigned to 3rd Bn., 7th SFG (A).

Mills' military education included Basic Airborne Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Air Movement Operations Course, the Special Forces Qualification Course, and the Special Forces Sniper Course.

Staff Sgt. Robert S. Goodwin, 35, was a Special Forces weapons sergeant assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C.

He was killed in action while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom on Sept. 20, 2004, during a combat patrol near the town of Shkin in Afghanistan's Paktika province when his vehicle came under fire from enemy forces.

A native of Albany, Ga., Goodwin enlisted in the Army in March 1989 as a medical specialist. After completing medical and airborne training, he was assigned to Fort Bragg, N.C., with assignment to the 44th Medical Brigade's 36th Medical Company, and later the 261st Area Support Medical Battalion. After deploying in support of Operation Desert Storm in 1991, Goodwin later served in Alaska and retrained as an infantryman prior to being selected in 2001 to attend the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Goodwin's military education includes the Special Forces Qualification Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Special Operations Target Interdiction Course, Jumpmaster Course and the Emergency Medical Technician Course.

Staff Sgt. Tony B. Olaes, 30, was a Special Forces medical sergeant assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C.

He was killed in action while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom on Sept. 20, 2004, during a combat patrol near the town of Shkin in Afghanistan's Paktika province when his vehicle came under fire from enemy forces.

A native of Walhalla, S.C., Olaes enlisted in the South Carolina Army National Guard in 1992 and trained to be a man-portable air-defense system crewmember. He left the military in May 1998 and in 1999 he re-entered the Army on active duty. Olaes trained at Fort Jackson, S.C., to be a multi-channel transmissions system operator-maintainer as was assigned to the 35th Signal Brigade (Airborne) at Fort Bragg.

He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2001 and was then assigned to the 3rd SFG.

Olaes' military education includes the Special Forces Qualification Course, Advanced Special Operations Techniques Course, Jumpmaster Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course and the Basic Airborne Course.

CPT Richard G. Cliff

Capt. Richard G. Cliff, Jr., 29, was killed Sept. 29 while conducting a combat reconnaissance patrol in the vicinity of Yakhchal, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of combat operations while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Sept. 2008 as a member of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan. This was his third deployment in support of the Global War on Terror and first deployment to Afghanistan. He was a Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha team commander.

Cliff was a native of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and was commissioned in June 2002 after graduation from Appalachian State University, Boone N.C. After a variety of infantry positions in the Army he began the Special Forces Qualification Course June 2007 and he earned the coveted "Green Beret" in July 2008.

Cliff's military education includes the Maneuver Captains Career Course, Infantry Officer Basic Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Course, Basic Airborne Course, Ranger Course, and Special Forces Qualification Course.

SSG Liam J. Nevins

Nevins was born on Sept. 11, 1981, in Middlebury, Vt. Nevins enlisted in the U.S. Army under the delayed entry program prior to his graduation from Bristol Borough High School.

Upon entering active duty, he was assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, N.C. Shortly after being promoted to the rank of sergeant, he deployed with Company A in 2003 as a rifle team leader in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan. He completed two more deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan in 2004 and 2005.

Nevins attended Metropolitan State College of Denver from Aug. 2006 to May 2009, after leaving active duty service.

In May of 2009, he enlisted into the Colorado Army National Guard. Nevins attended the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, N.C. from Jan. 2010 to Aug. 2011. He was assigned to Co. B, 5th Bn., 19th SFG (A) in Fort Carson, Colo.

His military education includes: United States Army Infantry School, Airborne School, Primary Leadership Development Course, Advanced Leaders Course, Static Line Jumpmaster Course, Reconnaissance Surveillance Leaders Course, Ranger School, Special Operations Language Training Arabic Course, the Special Forces Qualification Course as a communications sergeant, and the Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course.

Sgt. 1st Class Calvin B. Harrison, 31, was killed Sept. 29, during a combat operation in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. He was a Special Forces medical sergeant assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

Harrison was born March 11, 1979, in Cleveland, Texas. He graduated from Jones High School in Coldspring, Texas, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1998 as a psychological operations specialist. He served with the 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C., as a psychological operations specialist.

In 2007, Harrison completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and earned the coveted "Green Beret" as a Special Forces medical sergeant, 18D. He was then assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), also at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Harrison's military education includes the Basic Airborne Course, Warrior Leader Course, Advanced Leaders Course, Special Forces Qualification Course and Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape Course.

Staff Sgt. Jack Mayfield Martin III, 26, of Bethany, Okla. died after his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device Sept. 29, 2009 on Jolo Island, Philippines.

Martin was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. and was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines. This was Martin's first deployment in support of OEF-P; he was a veteran of Operation Iraq Freedom.

Martin, the youngest of five children was born in Maquoketa, Iowa and spent his childhood and teen years growing up in Iowa and Bethany, Okla.

He entered military service in 2001 and was selected to attend the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2004. Upon completion of SFQC, he was assigned to 3rd Bn., 1st SFG (A) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Martin's military education includes the Basic Airborne Course, Warrior Leader Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape Course and the Special Forces Qualification Course.

He volunteered for recruiting duty in 2001 and was assigned to the Pittsburgh, Pa. Recruiting Bn. Upon successful completion of that tour, he was assigned as a squad leader when he moved to Co. B, 2nd Bn., 1st Infantry Regiment at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. He began the Special Forces Qualification Course 2005 and he earned the coveted "Green Beret" in 2006 and was assigned to 1st Bn., 7th SFG(A) at Fort Bragg, N.C., as a Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha weapons sergeant.

Nicholas' military education includes the Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Northern Warfare Course, Recruiting Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Course, Combat Lifesavers Course, Basic Airborne Course, Air Assault Course, Warrior Leaders Course, and Special Forces Qualification Course.

Sgt. 1st Class Christopher D. Shaw, 37, of Natchez, Miss. died after his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device Sept. 29, 2009, on Jolo Island, Philippines.

Shaw was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. and was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines. This was his second deployment in support of OEF-P.

Shaw enlisted in the U.S. Army reserve Nov. 22, 1994, while attending Texas Southern University in Houston on a track and field scholarship. In May 1995, he decided to join the active-duty Army as a forward observer.

Upon completion of basic training, advanced individual training, and the U.S. Army Airborne School, Shaw was assigned as a fire support specialist to 2nd Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

In 1997, Shaw volunteered for the Special Forces Assessment and Selection course and completed the Special Forces Qualification Course in March 1999. Shaw was then assigned to 1st SFG (A) at Joint Base Lewis- McChord, Wash. He later served as an instructor at the Special Forces Qualification Course at Camp Mackall, N.C. and subsequently returned to 1st SFG (A) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Shaw's military education includes the U.S. Army Airborne School, U.S. Army Ranger Course, U.S. Army Jumpmaster Course, Basic Instructor Training Course, Advanced Non-commissioned Officer Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Warrior Leader Course, Special Operations Target Interdiction Course, Combat Lifesaver Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Course and the Special Forces Qualification Course. Shaw also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, N.J.

Awards: Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medals National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Meritorious Unit Citation and the Philippine Presidential Unit citation. Shaw earned the Special Forces tab, Ranger tab and the Parachutist Badge.

Shaw is survived by his wife Attina and their children Darian Shaw, Erielle Smith, Jalyn Smith, Dante Shaw and Cydney Shaw of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. He is also survived by his mother and step-father Camille and Willie Felton of Chicago, Ill.; his father Walter Owens of Port Wentworth, Ga.; two brothers, Orlando Shaw of Chicago, Ill. and Maurey Owens of Jackson, Miss.; and two sisters Kenya Shaw of Chicago, Ill. and Gwen Owens of Atlanta, Ga.

Sgt. 1st Class Riley Gene Stephens

Sgt. 1st Class Riley G. Stephens, 39, of Tolar, Texas, died Sept. 28 of wounds received from small-arms fire in Wardak Province, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C., and was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Stephens enlisted as an infantryman in the U.S. Army in 1993. Upon completion of his initial training, he was assigned to 1st Bn., 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, at Fort Campbell, Ky. There he served as a Squad Automatic Weapon Gunner, Radio-Telephone Operator and Team Leader with Company B. His next assignment was with the 1st Bn., 17th Inf. Reg., Fort Wainwright, Alaska, where he served as a Scout Section Leader.

Stephens volunteered for the Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course, and graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in March 2005. Upon earning his Special Forces tab, he reported to the 1st Bn., 3rd SFG (A) as a Special Forces medical sergeant. He served on five separate deployments to Afghanistan with the 1st Bn.

McGill joined the Marines in Hawaii in 2001, as a machine gunner and was assigned to the 3 rd Marine Division. He deployed with the 3rd Marine Div. in 2005. He joined the Rhode Island National Guard in 2008, and was assigned to 1st Bn., 200th Infantry Battalion as an anti-armor a specialist. In 2011, McGill graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course as a weapons sergeant and was assigned to Co. A, 2nd Bn., 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

His military education includes U.S. Army Airborne School, Combat Lifesaver Course, Combatives Level I Course, the Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Course, French Special Operations Language Training, Level I, the Special Forces Qualification Course and Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course.
